Optus has strengthened its network resilience ahead of what’s shaping up to be a big storm season. The telco has rolled out 200 additional generators, upgraded battery backups, and three new small-cell drones over the past 12 months.
Network upgrades
Optus’ network upgrades address mobile site failure when the grid goes down. At priority locations, Optus has tripled battery backup capacity, which means these sites can keep running for longer on stored power while generator deployment and repairs are organised.
The new fleet of generators allows Optus to direct extra power to regions that are hardest hit by adverse events rather than only relying on fixed power infrastructure.
As a last-resort backup, Optus invested in three small-cell drones that are capable of deploying mobile coverage in a 2-kilometre radius in isolated and hard-to-reach areas.
These backups join the network’s existing fleet of mobile satellite-connected portable base stations.
Storm season network resilience
Severe weather and telco connectivity problems often arrive together, and this year’s storm season is shaping up to be particularly brutal. El NiƱo is likely to strengthen through spring and summer, and the wet season has well and truly arrived in south-east Queensland.
When storms, floods, and fires knock out power grids, mobile networks are at risk of failure right when they’re needed most. That’s why it’s so important for telcos to invest in network reliability.
How to prepare for storm season
Network upgrades are only one side of the equation, so it’s worth taking a few minutes to ensure you’re prepared for storm season.
- Ensure your device is up to date. Phone updates and telco configurations often include emergency calling and network compatibility features.
- Write down important numbers. Triple Zero is easy to remember, but knowing your local emergency department and SES numbers can be crucial for non-emergency situations.
- Grab a power bank or power station. These can be a huge help in the event of a power outage to keep your devices and other essentials charged.
- Have a backup plan with family and neighbours for how to reach each other if your usual methods of communication are disrupted.
A little preparation goes a long way when it comes to storm season.
