To celebrate the launch of Gears of War, Microsoft is shouting a complimentary weekend of Xbox Live Gold access. From 3pm EST, Friday 24 November until 10pm EST, Sunday 26 November, every Australian Xbox 360 owner with a broadband connection will be able to experience the intense multiplayer action that is Gears of War online.

Cliff Bleszinski, lead designer for Gears of War at Epic Games, says, “The reception that Gears of War has received has been tremendous. Designing Gears of War has been a labour of love, and we’ve poured everything we have into the title. We expect this game to be huge, and it’s exhilarating to see that people are as excited about Gears of War as we are.”

Since the release of the title, gamers have snapped up the new shooter-title without a moments hesitation. It should come as no surprise then that Microsoft also recently announced that Gears of War has sold over 1 million copies worldwide. This was done in its first two weeks at retail and made the title the fastest selling of the year and the fastest selling original Xbox title ever.

The game has also ascended to be the top title on Xbox Live, with over 850,000 gamers having engaged in 10 million sessions while unlocking 7 million Achievements. Gears of War has also helped grow Live, with Gold registrations up over 50% since the game’s launch.
