The British government’s Gateway System has been shut down following the discovery of a memory stick full of confidential pass codes in a pub car park.

The Gateway System covers areas such as tax returns, pensions and parking tickets. The memory stick which belonged to the company that runs the system was some how mislaid… it is still unknown as to how it could wind up in a pub car park….

According to the Daily Mail, the Department for Work and Pensions said the system’s security had not been breached, but a computer expert told the newspaper the data could enable hackers to access personal details of the 12 million people who have registered on the system.

A spokesman for computer management company Atos Origin who run the software system said the “company takes the loss of this device very seriously and we are currently carrying out a full investigation of both the circumstances surrounding its loss and the data content of the stick.”
