A recent study of global broadband speeds has shown countries such as Australia, Great Britain, the US and Spain lagging far behind their industrialised counterparts.

The study compared the broadband speeds necessary to make good use of broadband applications such as videos chat, file sharing and streaming vids like YouTube. According to the study, Australian broadband speeds were barely adequate to make use of the features.

A total of 8 million tests were run by Oxford University and Cisco system. Speedtest.net was used to analyse data for upload and download speed as well as latency — the time it takes for a data packet to travel from source to destination – the resulting figure provided a ‘broadband quality score’.

According to the study, the top 10 countries in boradband quality are:

1. Japan

2. Sweden

3. Netherlands

4. Latvia

5. Korea

6. Switzerland

7. Lithuania

8. Denmark

9. Germany

10. Slovenia
