One of the reasons why Android and iOS have dominated the mobile phone and tablet market is because they have an enormous collection of apps. Microsoft is aware of this and has tried to catch up with Google Play and the Apple App store in terms of the number and type of apps in its Windows Phone market place.
In the past we’ve heard and witnessed how the Redmond company has encouraged developers to build apps for its platform by rewarding them with monetary incentives, with a number of developers reportedly being paid thousands of dollars to develop apps for Windows Phone. Today, Microsoft announced its Windows Phone App Studio to help in increasing the number of developers making apps for the WP platform.
The App Studio allows even ordinary users who don’t have knowledge on coding to build an app with the use of customizable themes, custom texts, graphics and design incorporated in an easy-to-use web interface. Developers can also publish their work if they have an active developer account. Moreover, developers can also register their phones and load apps on their device.
Taking all things into consideration, the App studio is a very ambitious yet risky move in Microsoft’s part. Yes, it will certainly encourage more people to create apps for the Windows Phone platform, however, the challenge is how to regulate the quality of submissions as the number of apps increase. The Windows Phone 8 app store has already been criticised in the past for having “spam” and redundant apps, so that’s one point that Microsoft needs to worry about.
