Support for larger screens, high resolution displays and faster processors are just some of the features of the updated version of Windows Phone 8, Microsoft’s mobile operating platform.

Windows Phone Update 3 will also include accessibility upgrades, and a developer program that will fast track fresh firmware into developers’ hands.

One of the key new firmware upgrades means that Windows Phone 8 can now fit properly onto tablet screens. With the last update you could only upscale to five- or six-inch screens, which make for a very awkward look. This is why Microsoft has added support for both the Qualcomm 8974 quad-core chip and 1080p screens, and adapted the core Windows Phone Start Screen software to suit bigger displays.

While the main feature will be the firmware upgrade, there are a few others that will be helpful, which include the ability to share the internet via Bluetooth without having to put in a password. You can also different ringtones so you can avoid calls from people you are trying to avoid without having to look at the screen to see who is calling (to be fair, this is standard on Android handsets).

While Microsoft might be crowing about these new updates meeting consumers’ needs and demands, it’s worth pointing out that a lot of what they have done is catch-up mode to its competitor, most of which already have these features. And while this new update and its features will be welcomed by Windows Phone 8 users, you’ll have to wait until the end of 2013, beginning of 2014, to get your hands on them.
