After its debut at BUILD 2014, Windows Phone 8.1 is finally here – at least for developers.

Ordinary consumers can also enjoy the update. Users can either pay Microsoft around AU$21 and get access to publishing apps in the Windows Phone store or register for free in the App studio to start the process.

However, choosing to update using the developer preview may involve some choices on the part of the user. For starters, performing the upgrade will likely void a device’s warranty, so if this is important to you, better hold off until the official update arrives.

Also, the current build is only a developer preview so it will only include updates from Microsoft. If you’ve been using an app from a carrier, don’t expect that app to be included in the update. If you’re okay with just the Microsoft-sanctioned features on your phone, the developer preview will let you enjoy Cortana, the Action center and swipe keyboard to name a few.
