Rumours are spreading all over the internet that Microsoft maybe planning to bring back the start button on Windows 8.1.

However, unlike the start button used on earlier versions of Windows, this Start button will only act as a method to access the Start Screen as opposed to the traditional button with a menu. According to sources familiar with the new build of Windows 8, the new start button will look nearly identical to the existing Windows logo in the Charm Bar.

The revival of the Start button may also be related to another rumour about the new operating system – its boot to desktop option. According to reports, Microsoft may also add an option to allow users to bypass the start screen and boot directly into the desktop environment.

The removal of the Start Button has long been an issue with Windows 8, and spurred the growth in popularity of a number of start button replacements such as Pokki, ViStart, Start8 and Power8 to name a few. And with PC sales continually declining, bringing back a familiar start button might be the deal breaker that some consumers are waiting to go back to Windows and the PC.
