It’s taken a while, but Microsoft has finally released the Windows 8.1 software update almost a year after the initial release of Windows 8, and can now be downloaded from the Windows Store.

The company lauded the release of Windows 8 back in October 2012, but there were several complaints by consumers, especially over the lack of a ‘start’ screen. That has now been rectified and users will be able to access the start screen via the start button at the bottom left-hand side of the screen.

The other notable change is that users will now be able to preset your tablet, laptop or other Window 8-enabled device so that it will automatically boot up to the more traditional Windows desktop.

Minor changes will be the ability to customise your wallpaper on the desktop, as well as being able to fiddle with the tile sizes, which is designed to allow users to prioritise their apps so that the ones they use most can be bigger.

On the app front, the camera app now incorporates a panorama setting, the mail app has additional options for sorting, and there is a new health and fitness app.

And for those users who are a bit more technophobic, Microsoft has added on-screen prompts as instructions on how to use the new software.

As well as getting the update via a download, but there will be a boxed version available in the near future, too.
