Reports coming in from the US suggest that Samsung is gearing up to release a tablet that features Microsoft’s Windows RT software.

The Windows RT software stands for ‘Runtime’ and is a very similar platform to the recently announced Windows 8 however RT has two main differences.

Firstly, it will have very limited openness to third-party applications and secondly its interface will be solely based on the recently-released ‘Metro’ version- no older Windows interfaces are supported in RT.

Windows RT is the first mainstream computer operating system from Microsoft to be purpose- built for mobile touch-screen devices such as smartphones and of course Tablets.

Samsung’s decision to support Windows RT means that not only will it have an Android tablet range with the Galaxy S3 but now, there is a distinct possibility that the company will be engaging its business partner Apple with Windows-based mobile devices in what some analysts suggest is a classic pincer-style attack.

According to the reports, Samsung’s Windows RT tablet will feature a Snapdragon processor, although any other meaningful technical details are at best sketchy.

What this also means for consumers is at this stage is also unclear, although judging by previous Samsung-Apple interactions, I bet there are a legion of lawyers at present just licking their communal chops and awaiting instructions for the next set of lawsuits and counter-lawsuits coming from both Apple and Samsung.
