UK inventors have developed a washing machine that uses thousands of tiny plastic chips and a cup of water to wash a full load of clothes – leaving the garments clean and virtually dry.

Around 20kg of chips are added to each load along with the water and detergent. During the wash cycle the water is heated to help dissolve the stains which are then absorbed by the plastic chips. The chips are removed at the end of each wash but can be used up to 100 times.

The new technology, has been dubbed Xeros, and could potentially save millions of litres of water each year.
