Fresh from its announcement of its smartphone operating system just a few weeks ago – Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu is standing by its vision of a unified ecosystem for PCs, smartphones and other mobile devices. And this vision could have been made any clearer when a countdown timer appeared on Ubuntu’s website with the phrase: “Tick, tock, tablet time!” splashed right beside it.

However, Canonical isn’t known to produce its own hardware, so it is very likely that the announcement would pertain to an optimised version of the operating system that the company has announced earlier for smartphones. In case they decides to face tablet giants such as Apple and Android, Ubuntu would need to have a touch-friendly interface if it hopes to even be considered as an alternative to other devices that are already dominating the market.

This announcement would coincide with HTC’s big event tomorrow and although an Ubuntu powered tablet isn’t as sensationalized as the newest devices from the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer, it’s very interesting to see what Ubuntu will bring to tablet users and how it will fair in an already competitive market.
