Google’s Project Ara Developer Conference kicked off this week with Google showing off a “functional” prototype of the modular handset. Aside from Google, Toshiba was also at the conference and reveals its vision on how the modular phone can further be improved.

Toshiba’s Senior VP and Technology Executive Shardul Kazi presented a slide at the event that gives details on how Project Ara’s modular technology can be extended to other smart devices such as smartwatches. During his presentation at the event, Kazi showed a presentation on how an Ara module can be removed from the phone and placed into a wearable device.

Although the concept is purely theoretical and Kazi is quick to point out that such idea is still not in development, it does open a huge opportunity for manufacturers to save on cost of production by creating modules that are compatible with different devices, and at the same time be beneficial to consumers who only need to purchase modules for the different products they own.
