After long months of wait, rumours and hype, the iPhone 5 is finally here.

Apple has announced that the new iPhone 5, which looks similar to its predecessor models, now features a bigger four-inch display with Retina display, an A6 chipset for faster and more powerful performance, a 4G wireless connection, an improved camera, and an all-aluminum design.

Pre-order will start Friday, 14th of September in Australia, as with other countries globally. Pricing starts at AUS$799 for 16GB, AUS$899 for the 32GB, and AUS$999 for the 64GB model.

Apple's vice president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, introduced the iPhone 5 as the company's "most beautiful product we have ever made."

Dubbed the “thinnest smartphone in the world,” iPhone measures 7.6-millimeter thin, is made of anodised aluminium body, making it 18 per cent thinner and lighter than its predecessor, iPhone 4S. There is also a higher-capacity battery that comes with the new phone, which is capable of handling 220 hours of standby time.

The 4-inch Retina display packs in more pixels than the old iPhone range. With taller and not wider screen size, Apple says this gives users more flexibility to use the device with just one hand, doing the tapping, typing and scrolling like they always do with the former iPhone range.

With LTE and DC-HSDPA standards integrated into the device, the iPhone 5 is also promised to give ultrafast wireless connections so browsing, downloading and even streaming of content come faster. Apple says that it brings to the iPhone a pioneering single-radio LTE solution to ensure that the phone can support the latest LTE technology without compromising on this range's thin design.

An all-new A6 chipset was also added that Apple claims can give twice the CPU and graphics performance of the new handset, which makes this device capable of performing various tasks, including launching of apps, loading web pages, downloading email attachments, and also to support new features and the new four-inch Retina display.

The back iSight camera is an improved 8-megapixel that is smaller by 25 per cent than the iPhone 4S camera. There is also a thin sapphire crystal lens cover which is more durable than standard glass. The new Panorama feature lets users capture images of up to 28-megapixels by moving the camera across a scene in one smooth motion.

The video of the new phone is also improved with better image stabilisation, face detection for up to ten faces, and the ability to take still photos while recording. The FaceTime front-facing camera can record 720p HD video.

As has been rumoured, the iPhone 5's connector is now smaller and it is called “Lightning.” It's an all-digital connector with an adaptive interface that uses signals that each accessory requires. This is also reversible to allow users to connect to their accessories. It also says that has 30-pin adapter that can connect iPhone 5 to legacy 30-pin accessories.

The audio capability was also an improvement from the previous models with a new beam-forming feature and directional microphone system with noise-cancelling technology. There is also support for cellular wideband audio for clarity and natural sounding speech but this will be supported by only 20 carriers worldwide at launch.

There is also a new Earpods that come with the iPhone, featuring a new design for more natural fit and incredible acoustic quality typically reserved for higher-end earphones.

The new iPhone 5 also comes with the latest operating system of Apple, iOS 6. The OS has more than 200 new features, including the new Map app with Flyover view, Facebook integration for Contacts and Calendar, Passbook, and the new Siri with more language support.

The new iPhone comes in black and slate or white and silver colours.
