The gold Apple Watch could cost as much as USD$5000

The gold version of the Apple Watch could cost as much as USD$5,000 according to French Apple rumour website igen.fr. Dubbed the Apple Watch Edition, the high-end wearable will be made from 18-carat gold, features gold straps and buckle. Conversely, the entry level Apple Watch will retail for USD$350.

Apple writer John Gruber has speculated that Apple could make the chip that powers the Apple Watch replaceable, giving the device a longer lifespan.

On a page detailing the Apple Watch's internals, the company state the following about the wearable's processor: "We found a way to integrate many subsystems into one remarkably compact module, which is then completely encapsulated in resin to protect the electronics from the elements, impact, and wear. Configuring an entire computer system on a single chip is an industry first and represents a singular feat of engineering and miniaturization."

While this suggests that there may be potential to upgrade the Apple Watch's internals, Apple has also regularly updated and refined the physical appearance of its products.

The Apple Watch will be available in early 2015.
