The Large Hadron Collider – the world’s biggest particle accelerator – is due to be switched on at 630pm this evening, with many sci fi buffs predicting the machine will bring about the end of the world…

The Large Hadron Collider aka ‘Doomsday Device’ is built underneath the Franco-Swiss border and owned and operated by European science organisation CERN. Since announcing their intentions t power up the device, scientists at CERN have received death threats demanding they stop the experiment.

When the Large Hadron Collider is activated it will shoot a particle beam around a 27km circular tunnel in the first of a series of experiments scientists are hoping will recreate the aftermath of the Big Bang.

CERN hopes these experiments will uncover the theoretical Higgs-Boson particle and some more information on the nature of matter.

Meanwhile people are hosting End of the World parties – including 23 year old Sydney uni student Mr Hibbert Wells, who says if the end of the world does occur his last words will be to his girlfriend – to tell her he loves her…
