People who suffer corneal disease tend to have impaired vision once the disease has taken hold, but a new invention might just give the gift of the sight back to patients.

Developed by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany – the same people you have to thank for developing the MP3 – the artificial cornea attaches to the original cornea and can survive without water to absorb or cells to grow on it.

While it’s unlikely to bring vision to people who are entirely blind, those who have had vision loss due to damaged corneas can start to think about returned vision as human trials are slated to begin next year.
