Telstra announces next-gen mobile network

Telstra has launched a $1 billion mobile Internet service, the “NEXT G” network, which offers 12 channels of Foxtel television, sport and movie downloads, is said to be 100 times bigger geographically and up to five times faster than any other mobile network in Australia.

The NEXT G network, built on high speed downlink packet access technology (HSDPA), is up to 50 times faster than dial-up and up to five times faster than existing 3GSM networks, said Telstra.

However it will require customers to buy a special new handset. One of the new handsets, announced today by electronics maker LG, will retail for $619.

The new broadband network is touted to offer high-speed wireless mobile and internet access to 98 per cent of Australians.
