Sony today announced the newest member of its line of NEX compact system camera – the NEX-5T.

The camera features a large, high-resolution 16.1 megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor that is identical in size with other traditional DSLR cameras. It will also come with a compact SELP1650 motorised zoom lens, which measures only about 1.2 inches thick when fully retracted. The lens also contains a built-in Optical Steady Shot image stabilisation for clearer images and has a smooth power zoom dial that is useful during video shooting.

The NEX-5T is also the first interchangeable lens camera to feature NFC technology.  This gives the camera the ability to connect with compatible Android smartphones and tablets for faster and more convenient image transfer. Moreover, the camera is equipped with Wi-Fi technology in case an NFC compatible device is not around.

The camera also sports a fast Hybrid AF system that combines phase-detection and contrast detection methods for a speedy and accurate autofocus in any shooting situation. The intuitive focusing system uses 99 phase-detection AF points arrayed on the image sensor to detect a subject’s distance and quickly lock focus.

The NEX-5T will be available in black, silver or white for around $700 in a kit with a compact, 16-50mm motorised zoom lens and will be commercially available by next month.
