Just a few hours after the official release of Firefox OS yesterday and Mozilla is already making ground with Sony’s announcement that they are currently developing hardware to support Mozilla’s mobile operating system.

The news was part of the announcement between Sony Mobile and Spanish wireless carrier Telefonica. Both companies have signed a multi-year agreement that guarantees Telefonica’s continued support for Sony’s current Android devices as well as a joint technical collaboration for the development of handsets powered by Mozilla’s open source mobile platform – Firefox OS.

Based on reports, it seems that Sony is already past the exploration stage and that their engineers are already working with Firefox OS Mobile and HTML5 with the goal of bringing a product to market by 2014.

Currently, Firefox OS is already backed by several manufacturers including Alcatel, ZTE and Huawei. However, if Mozilla plans to penetrate the already competitive market of most economies such as the United States, it needs a brand like Sony to ensure that this would happen.
