You’ve probably heard of that story from China wherein a person was injured after her iPhone exploded while she was charging it using a third party charger. Since then, Apple has discouraged consumers to use knock-off accessories that may not be compatible with their products.

Now, it appears that Apple’s toughest competitor in the smartphone market is also doing something about the growing industry of third party accessories. According to reports, the Korean tech giant is currently exploring the use of ID chips to ward faulty third party accessories.

The chip will be able to reject accessories that it identifies as something not deemed for use with Samsung smartphones or tablet.

On the bright side, the presence of this compatibility ID chip will ensure the safety of the consumer when using Samsung’s products and will help avoid accidents in the future. On the down side, the ID chip will enable Samsung and other manufacturers if they choose to implement the same system to somehow monopolize the accessories market, which also affects consumers.
