Barely four months after the release of its first smartphone, Finnish company Jolla announced today that its Sailfish OS is now compatible with Android software and hardware.

Users will now be able to take full advantage of the Android ecosystem by allowing specific apps such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Spotify and WeChat compatible with the operating system. Moreover, the OS is now compatible with common Android hardware, specifically smartphones and tablets.

Jolla says the apps will be available from various app stores globally but didn’t mention which app stores it will be. For instance, a report from GigaOM says that Google Play will not be included in the list of app stores that will offer Sailfish OS-compatible apps.

Having said this, the folks from Jolla plan to use Android’s massive user base in order to get more traction to consumers. Moreover, the platform’s compatibility to Android hardware makes it easy for manufacturers to easily create devices for Sailfish OS.

Aside from the Android-compatible apps, Jolla will also be offering a second batch of Sailfish phone pre-orders on its website this week for Finnish customers who still want to get their hands on the Jolla phone.
