Sony’s latest firmware update to the PS3 has caused some distress to some people as a number of gamers have reported on PS3 forums that their consoles are no longer able to boot after performing the update.

The update in question is the PS3’s firware update version 4.45 which was supposed to allow users to select whether or not they want an in-game notification when a trophy is earned. According to reports, it appears the problem only affects users with hard drives installed that are 500GB or larger.

At the moment, Sony has already been notified and is aware of the problem and has temporarily taken the firmware update offline to investigate the issue. Sony has not provided any additional information about the issue but promises to provide a system update to fix the problem.

For those users who are left with bricked PS3 units, they can still install the update once it arrives by booting into safe mode and installing the update from there.
