Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky noted in a backer update view yesterday that an early version of the Pebble smartwatch’s SDK (Software Developer Kit) will be released to early Pebble developers around the second week or April.

This early version of the SDK will be geared towards the development of new watch faces as opposed to what other developers were expecting, which is to gain access into the watch’s sensors and radios for the development of games and other apps. In fact the SDK release is seen by many as more a proof-of-concept release, although Migicovsky stated that there is a fat chance that the SDK will be further revamped in the future.

The early SDK has been in testing with a group of around 100 “hacker” backers who pledged around $235 or more for the privilege of customizing the watch’s software. On a related note, Migicovsky also announced that the latest firmware update for Pebble will be released sometime in the next two weeks which includes reorganization of button functions and displaying of text on the watch.

Moving forward, although the company isn’t acting as quickly in terms of development for the watch, it’s a good sign that  Pebble is moving into the next direction of improving the app ecosystem that will later on fuel the interest of people in the device.
