Nikon recently announced the Nikon CoolPix A – a compact digital camera with rendering capabilities comparable to those of Digital SLR cameras.

The Nikon CoolPix A sports a new wide-angle 18.5mm, f/2.8 fixed focal length NIKKOR lens. This lens were exclusively developed for this particular camera and has been optimised for the DX-format CMOS sensor and mechanical design of the lens barrel. This optical design maximises the lens performance at the same time makes it possible for the Coolpix A to have a smaller and compact body.

The CoolPix A’s DX-format CMOS image sensor has an effective pixel count of 16.2-million pixels which is complimented by the EXPEED 2 image-processing engine, both of which are already in use in a lot of Nikon DX-format DSLR cameras. The camera supports a broad range of standard sensitivities, from ISO 100 to ISO 6400, as well as additional expansion of up to ISO 25600 for crisp, clear images with minimal noise.

The lens also has a focus ring that allows users to focus in a way that suits their creative intent. It allows users to have more flexibility in terms of adjustment of focus which is a feature more commonly found on DSLR cameras.

The CoolPix A is also capable of capturing high-resolution videos thanks to the combination of the NIKKOR Lens, the DX-format CMOS image sensor and the EXPEED 2 image-processing engine. Other notable features of the camera include a high-speed continuous shooting mode at approximately 4fps and an Active D-Lighting feature which prevents the loss of detail in highlights and shadows for images exhibiting brightness.

There’s also Nikon’s exclusive Picture control imaging system which allows users to choose and adjust the way in which the camera processes photographs according to the type of scene or their own individual preference. It also has a variety of image editing functions, including filter effects, colour sketch, selective colour and miniature effect.
