MySpace spammers fined

US Federal District Court Judge Audrey Collins has ordered Sanford Wallace and Walter Rines to pay MySpace $US 230 million for spamming MySpace users.

US Federal District Court Judge Audrey Collins has ordered Sanford Wallace and Walter Rines to pay MySpace $US 230 million for spamming MySpace users.

The duo used their own and other MySpace users accounts to send a deluge of messages that tricked users into linking to sales pitches or websites that earned the men pay ‘per hit’… Some of the linked websites contained adult material, putting young My Space users at risk.

Wallace and Rines sent more than 725,000 email messages to MySpace users, setting the the emails to appear as though they were sent by friends of users, whose messages could be trusted.
In doing so, the pair violated US anti spam laws.
