Rumours about Microsoft working on a 7-inch tablet are now circulating over the internet like wild fire.

The smaller tablet is expected to go into production later this year and will most likely cost lower than the current Surface tablets in order to have a chance at competing against the Google Nexus 7 and Apple’s iPad Mini.

According to rumours, a 7-inch tablet wasn’t really part of the company’s original strategy. However, Microsoft executives realized that the company needed a slate released in the market as consumers demand for such devices have shifted in favour of tablets that have screen sizes lower than 8-inches.

Also, the development of a 7-inch Windows 8 tablet is also not that hard to believe, especially since Microsoft has reduced the minimum resolution for Windows 8 devices from 1366×768, the minimum requirement of a device to run the operating system is now down to 1024×768 pixels.’

Nevertheless, the addition of another 7-inch tablet in the market may tip the scales of demand and break the duopoly between Google and Apple in the tablet market. This is actually good for consumers as the entry of a new player in the market may help push prices even further down and will foster stiffer competition that results in better products.
