Microsoft holds Pacman world championships

Microsoft is teaming up with Pac-Man developer Namco-Bandai to host what it’s billing as the world championships for the classic ’80s game.

In place of the original arcade machines, tournament entrants will play – naturally – on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console and compete with each other over the Xbox Live multiplayer network. Play is slated to start on 25 April.

Microsoft said it’s expecting entrants from countries and regions around the world, including Asia, Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, and the United States. Nine players will advance to the finals, to be held June 5 in New York City, where Pac-Man creator Toru Iwatani will be on hand to crown the winner.

The champ will receive a one-of-a-kind Pac-Man embossed version of the Xbox 360, free Quiznos subs for 26 years, and 100,000 Microsoft Points that can be used to download movies, games, and other Xbox Live content.
