Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer chose CES as the place to announce beta testing for Windows 7. Those unhappy with Windows Vista will no doubt be clamouring to grab a download.

The announcement was part of Ballmer’s inaugural keynote speech at CES. The only other announcement of note in Ballmer’s keynote was that Microsoft had just won the contract with US telco Verizon to be the default search engine on Verizon’s wireless phones. From a consumer standpoint there’s not much to woohooo about there…

Ballmer also concentrated his key note on convergence devices proclaiming that TVs, PCs and Phones were on the merge…

They’re evolving into a seamless ecosystem…Screens and displays will literally be everywhere and PCs, phones, TVs, and other devices will become a single experience.”

The public beta of Windows 7 is available immediately for customers of Microsoft’s MSDN, TechBeta, and TechNet services. On Friday Jan 09 (US time) regular consumers will be able to download the Beta for free.
