Microsoft has reportedly been working on a smartphone prototype for just over a year.

The company is said to be already on the prototype phase with teams who have worked on Xbox accessories and the Kinect sensor working on the device. Reports also say that the smartwatch may feature removable bands attached to a 1.5-inch touch display and will have the same magnetic connector that the company uses on its Windows 8 Surface tablets.

Microsoft has previously been reported to be working on a “Joule” heart rate monitor for the Xbox (which is probably a similar wearable accessory that will supposedly help users track their heart rate wirelessly when playing fitness games on the Xbox 360) but the company decided to focus on the smartwatch instead.
