MediaTek recently announced its newest chip that features a true octa-core CPU that should give Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 and 805, as well as Samsung’s Exynos chips some competition.

The MediaTek MT6595 will have four Cortex-A17 cores clocked from 2.2GHz to 2.5GHz, and another four Cortex-A7 cores clocked at 1.7GHz. Unlike previous generations of octa-core chips, this chip will be able to run all 8 cores simultaneously.

It will run using ARM’s big.LITTLE configuration complemented by HMP (Heterogeneous Multi-Processing) technology, which should provide a boost in performance up to 60% in contrast to the Cortex-A9. The chip will also support 4K2K video recording and playback.

We should expect the chip to be installed on upcoming mobile devices, most of which should make an appearance at Mobile World Congress (MWC 2014) this month.
