Little known UK actor Matt Smith will take on the mantle of the new Dr Who when the current Dr, David Tennant bows out of the series.

Smith is the eleventh actor to play the time travelling Time Lord and the 26 year old, who has only two major credits to his resume; the BBC1 literary adaptation The Ruby in the Smoke (which coincidentally co-starred Billy Piper) and BBC2’s underrated Party Animals may seem an unlikely choice to play one of the best loved characters on UK TV. But let’s not forget that David Tennant (voted most popular Dr Who ever) had only one TV series under his belt before stepping into the Dr’s shoes. And just like Tennant, Smith has already made a name for himself treading the boards of the UK stage.
