Instagram today announced a major update to popular image sharing service.  Key new features include an improved Explore tab, making it easier for users to find to new find people to follow, and editable captions – one of the social network's most requested features.

"We're a platform of more than 200 million people and we really want to make it easy for people to find compelling and interesting content on Instagram," said Instagram Communication Manager Gabe Madway. "What you saw today is the first toward making it a lot easier to find accounts that they find captivating."

The Explore page now has two tabs: Photos and People. The Photo tab is unchanged, whereas People tab is designed to highlight interesting accounts. Around 40% of Instagram's daily users visit the Explore page on average day, according to Madway. Engagement on this tab has increased seven fold since the service began showcasing content tailored to each individual user.

The update also brings a couple of under-the-hood changes including predictive search, and more personalised search results.
