HP issues notebook battery recall over fire risk

HP has issued a worldwide product recall of batteries bundled with over 30 different laptop models amid concerns of overheating and fire risk. The recall applies to the batteries included with computers sold between March 2013 and August 2015, under the HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP Envy, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion monikers, and batteries sold as accessories or spares.

An app that will check whether a HP notebook's battery is affected is available via HP's online hub for the recall. The company says the process should take less than 30 seconds. A manual validation process is also available. HP will provide free replacement batteries to anyone affected by the recall. In the meantime, HP advises customers cease using the affected battery and rely on external power.
