Hoax tricks gullible users into microwaving their iPhones
At least four iPhone users have microwaved their handsets following the circulation of a fake image announcing high-speed charging. The hoax alleged that iOS8 would allow users to recharge their Apple devices in under two minutes through the use of a household microwave.
Users appear to have fallen victim to the hoax due to how closely the graphic mirrors Apple’s genuine communications. The circulated image suggested that iOS8 contained new drivers that interfaced with a device’s “radio-baseband, allowing it to synchronise with microwave frequencies”.
