Halo 4, the first game in the seminal shooter series to be developed by a studio other than Bungie, is launching at midnight on Monday, marking what Microsoft hails as "the year's biggest entertainment event".

The game will go out in 10,000 retail stores in 40 countries worldwide.

The new franchise will also see the return of 10-foot-tall super soldier Master Chief after being absent for five years from the series.

The first Halo game was released in 2001 and was originally created by game studio Bungie. However, the studio has moved on to a different series, now working with Activision.

Microsoft has no intention of retiring the Halo series so it has passed the baton to its new in-house game studio 343 Industries. According to 343 Industries' Halo Franchise Director Frank O'Connor, the series will continue past Halo 4 and the current gaming set and will go onto Xbox 720.

Microsoft Studios Corporate Vice President Phil Spencer says that Halo is Microsoft's "most important entertainment product," and that Halo 4 is "absolutely" the most expensive game the company has ever made.

"The launch of Halo 4 is a prominent entertainment event and we're thrilled to be partnering with Microsoft to host midnight celebrations across the country," says Tony Bartel, president of GameStop, according to GamesBeat.

"Our community is anxiously awaiting the return of Master Chief, and there's no doubt in my mind that Halo 4 will be one of the biggest games of the year."
