There is now an official release date for Grand Theft Auto V but the game will not be out until September 17 2013 – more than five years after the game’s previous iteration was launched.

Rockstar, who initially claimed a Spring 2013 release date, now said it is pushing the launch back "in order to allow additional development time" which seems fairly reasonable since Rockstar is calling the GTA 5-verse "our deepest, most beautiful and most immersive world yet".

“We know this is about four months later than originally planned, and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time,” Rockstar said.

On some negative comments from passionate fans of the series, Rockstar said it delayed the game only because "we want the game to be as good as it needs to be" and there wasn't an "ulterior motive for this delay."

On September 17, the game will be available on Xbox 360 and PS3. Also, the next generation Xbox and the PS4 are both expected to land pre-Christmas 2013.

GTA 5 has been a long time coming – in 2009, there were speculations that it would launch in 2011.

Following today's announcement, parent company Take-Two Interactive saw its shares slide nearly 7 percent to close at $12.17.
