Google plan to launch a mobile phone to run on their Android software. The phone, built by popular Taiwanese phone company HTC will be revealed in New York City next week.

US telco T-Mobile will carry the phone, with the device tipped for sale as early as October.

According to news reports, Google is planning to showcase the Andriod software in the hopes of luring other handset companies into using the open source platform on their handsets. The software has been designed to optimise speed and quality of internet use on mobile phones.

industry pundits predict the software could transform the telephone market by providing a model where services are supported by ads rather than subscription fees.

Google announced a 34-member group called the “Open Handset Alliance” in November of 2007 to develop Android, including China Mobile, HTC, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm, T-Mobile, Telefonica, LG and eBay.
