It seems the arrival of Google’s Glasses – the search giant’s augmented reality head-mounted display is closer than we think. Just last month, Google held two top-secret Glass Foundry events in New York City and San Francisco.

The closed-door events were attended by developers who were required to sign several non-disclosure agreements promising not to share the information they received during the event. According to a post on the developer Google +1 page, the two-day event allowed developers to experience the Glass and the API which Google has developed first hand.

The developers were then asked to form teams and develop new applications for the Glass. Everyone who demoed received a special edition glass bar with the “Pioneer” word inscribed. Moreover, there were eight teams that were chosen to win the grand prize – the Glass Explorer Edition free of charge courtesy of Google.

Although details of the API are still confidential, representatives from Google have expressed their delight with how the event has given them the opportunity to get their engineers to work directly with the developers and the API. Having said this, Google representatives said that they are already working on improving the API based on what they learned from the conference.

With developers backing the project and Google’s recent announcement of branching into retail, it is very likely that we’ll see a Google Glass in the very near future.
