Google today announced Australia’s most web-savvy towns through its second eTown Awards. The award celebrates cities and regio0ns where small businesses make the best use of the web to connect with their customers and grow.

Google was able to generate a list of 8 eTowns by state and territory, which include the following; with the overall winner to be announced in the coming weeks.

  • Cockburn, WA
  • Darwin, NT
  • Holdfast, Bay
  • Launceston, Tasmania
  • North Sdyney, NSW
  • Port Phillipp, Vic
  • South Canberra, ACT
  • Sunship Cost, Qld

The determination of the list was done in cooperation with Ipsos Australia and was done by breaking Australia into all its different towns and cities. Google then determined the number of Google AdWords customers in the area and then compared It to the data of small and medium sized businesses with an online presence.

According to Claire Hatton, Head of Local Business, Google Australia, “Businesses across the country are recognising the online opportunity, from social media that allows direct consumer engagement, to websites with e-commerce capabilities where products can be sold to anyone in the world.”

The results of the eTown awards not only shows a shift in consumer behaviour and preference but also the growing importance of an online presence to small and medium businesses as an effective tool for reaching out to consumers.
