Google announced today an update to Gmail that aims to bring to users a new system of organizing emails through the use of tabs.

The revamped Gmail will now feature at the very least 5 tabs namely: Primary, Social (aggregates emails from Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc.), Promotions (e.g. emails from Groupon, LivingSocial), Updates (includes confirmations, statements, receipts and bills) and Forums (emails from discussion boards, forums, etc).

Emails are then segregated into these five tabs by means of Google’s machine learning technology. However, users can still add or remove these tabs if they wish. And in case the system puts some of the user’s email in the wrong tabbed, they can be easily ticked and dragged into the right tab.

Google has noted that the company plans to rollout this update gradually so it may not appear on your inboxes yet. Moreover, updates for its iOS and Android apps are scheduled to roll out starting next week.
