Aside from HTC’s UltraPixel cameras and a few smartphones from Sony and Samsung, the camera quality of most Android-based smartphones have paled in contrast to that of the iPhone and possibly a number of Nokia Lumia handsets.

But a newly discovered code on Android may soon change all that. Originally discovered by ArsTechnica, the code is documented in a public Android source code pertains to several new features on the platforms camera specifically about a new set of tools including face detection, burst fire and RAW image support.

The code appears to have been in the works since December last year and was almost included on Android KitKat, but was removed sometime in October. There’s no word yet on when Google will incorporate the new features on Android, but it’s definitely something to look forward to especially on future Nexus-branded smartphones.
