Foursquare, a location-based social networking website for mobile devices is adding local search as one of its main features in order to help attract new users.

The announcement was made at the 2013 SXSW at Austin, Texas by Foursquare’s CEO, Dennis Crowley. According to Crowley, Foursquare has been really good at providing personalised search results and the company is planning to invest on providing useful information to its users in order to compete with the Googles and the Facebooks of the world.

At present, Foursquare’s mobile app lets users check-in and share their location through the user’s social networking sites. Moreover, the app has allowed users to sync their credit card with their Foursquare account to receive discounts and deals from participating merchants.

The additional local search functionality puts Foursquare in the direct firing line of Yelp who also provides local search for users online. Whether or not the new feature of the app will be able to make Yelp’s existing fans switch to Foursquare is something that only time can tell.
