Ever have that problem where you try and plug in a USB cable to charge your phone and it doesn't fit, so you turn it around, but it still doesn't fit and it turns out you had it the right way around the first time? Fortunately, that's all about to change; the next generation USB cable has been finalised and can be plugged in upside down.

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group has announced that that latest USB specification, known as USB Type-C, has been finalised. As with Apple's Lightning connector (found on the iPhone and iPad), it can be plugged in either way.

USB Type-C ports will be 8.4 by 2.6mm in size and will be compatible with USB 3.1 transferred speeds – 10 Gigabits per second. It will also support power delivery of up to 100W.

Alex Peleg, Intel's vice president of Platform Engineering said "This next generation of USB technology opens the door for the invention of an entirely new super thin class of devices that consumers haven't ever seen yet". It is expected that the industry will slowly transition to USB Type-C, and new ports will coexist with other USB ports for the meantime.
