Facebook is rumoured to be considering the integration of hashtags in its website.

The hashtag which is commonly used on Twitter for categorizing content seems to be making its way to Facebook. According to reports, the social networking site may launch hashtags to get content to be easily indexed and surfaced by Graph search.

However, sources say that it’s still too early to tell if hash tags will end up on the site as Facebook needs to be reconfigured to facilitate this feature. At present, Facebook’s internal search engine only returns people, places, pages, apps, media and interests. So in order to get a hashtag to be useful for the site, Facebook needs to make posts of its members also searchable.

Privacy can also be an issue with the use of hashtags as most Facebook users have set some level of privacy for their posts and profiles. So in case someone searches for a post, only those that are set as public will be shown in the search results.

Nevertheless, the inclusion of hashtags on the site will greatly improve user experience especially now that the social networking site has overhauled its news feed section to show categorized content.
