Facebook is making headway in its bid for world domination, topping 1 billion users- that is out of the 7 billion people in the world.

It reached one billion monthly active users on September 14 at 12:45 pm Pacific time. Out of that number, 600 million are mobile users.

The announcement comes in spite of the rough patch is presently enduring following its initial public offering. There were trading glitches the day it went public in May and there were concerns about its revenue potential. Facebook shares, which hit the market at $38 in May, closed Wednesday at $21.83, but in pre-market trade was up 1.9 percent at $22.25.

"Things go in cycles. We're obviously in a tough cycle now and that doesn't help morale, but at the same time, you know, people here are focused on the things that they're building," said Co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg.

"I mean, you get to build things here that touch a billion people, which is just not something that you can say at almost anywhere else, so I think that's really the thing that motivates people."
