The Wall Street Journal reports that Facebook might be working on its own mobile news reader that is targeted for use with mobile devices.

The project is called “Reader” and will reportedly have a similar interface to another popular news reader – Flipboard. According to the WSJ, Facebook has already been working with the app for over a year now and with Mark Zuckerberg himself said to be involved in the project.

Facebook hasn’t comment on the validity of the report, but there are clues from the company’s recent activity that may point to the app’s existence. For starters, Facebook recently added hashtag support which hints that the social network may soon focus on tracking topics. There is also unused RSS code on Facebook’s Graph API which will certainly prove useful for browsing story feeds.

Nevertheless, mobile is an integral part of Facebook’s business, and with Google retreating from the battlefield, it certainly leaves a big opportunity not only for Facebook but also for other companies such as Feedly, Digg and AOL.
