Facebook is following Twitter’s footsteps when it comes to authenticating high-profile accounts with the networks new verified feature for pages and profiles.

This new feature will be rolled out to a select group of prominent public figures and popular brands and businesses with large audiences. The social network has provided a small section in its help center that describes what a verified profile or page actually is, but it fails to clarify how it goes about verifying any of its users.

Similar to Twitter, Verified pages on Facebook will sport a small blue checkmark to indicate that a person or a business is indeed the account holder. The mark appears on the pages themselves, as well as in the search results page and throughout the site.  Furthermore, users won’t be able to request Facebook for their accounts to be verified. Instead, just like in Twitter, Facebook will be the one to decide whether a certain profile or page needs to be verified for authenticity.

The feature is already in place and majority of public figures which Facebook deems worthy have already been automatically verified.
