Fresh from its announcement for its support for Mozilla’s Firefox OS – Sony has released an experimental Firefox OS ROM for its budget Android phone – the Sony Xperia E.

Sony Xperia E owners who are feeling the itch to try out the new platform can already download and install Firefox OS into their phones. Sony chose this particular phone model as its specifications are relatively similar to the ZTE Open and Alcatel Firefox One Touch Fire that are already using the OS.

Sony also hopes to give app developers a chance to evaluate the platform and give valuable feedback to be used for its future development for other devices. However, the ROM is still in its very early stages and a lot of features are still missing.

For starters there’s no wireless connectivity as this needs certification. Moreover, the touchscreen and the microSD card might not well as smoothly as the codes for these features aren’t optimised yet.

For those interested in taking the experimental ROM for a spin, the Sony Developer blog has put details on their website on how to flash the ROM in to the Xperia E as well as information on the architecture of Firefox OS and how to develop apps for it.
