Dropbox adds “Request” feature for easy file collection

Dropbox today unveiled a new feature it calls "File Requests" that allows a user's friends and colleagues to upload documents directly to the original user's account without the need for one of their own.

"We often hear from users that getting files from other people can be a pain," wrote Dropbox Product Manager Mindy Zhang on the company's official blog. "Whether it’s photos from friends or docs from colleagues, collecting files usually means fishing through a sea of email attachments."

To utilise the File Requests feature, users will create a Request via the web interface, assign a directory within their Dropbox, and then receive a link that they can share. The user uploading the requested file will have to enter a name and valid email address when doing so.

Dropbox Basic and Dropbox Pro users will have access to File Requests as of today. Business customers will gain access in the coming weeks.
